Janji Joni or Joni’s Promise is the first film from Joko Anwar as Director and the second time as film writer (the first time is in Arisan (2003)). Even though this film is the first time by Joko Anwar as a director but he already shows his potential here and it is guaranteed that you’ll never regret watching this movie. Joko Anwar himself said that in making this film he had not known anything about what about film is, technical skill? “Bullshit I don’t know anything about filmmaking” he said. Anwar maybe has little knowledge about film at that time; however, this film is so good as it wins the best movie in MTV Indonesia Movie Award. Through this film, Anwar already showed his potential.

Janji Joni tells a story of Joni (Nicholas Saputra) who works part-time as a reel/film delivery man among cinemas in Jakarta. Joni is an innocent man who has never been in love in his life and he is working as a reel delivery man. Working for a year he is never late. One day when he is delivering a reel he sees a gorgeous woman (Mariana Renata) who comes to the cinema to watch a movie with a man called Otto (Surya Saputra). Gathering all his courage Joni talks to the girl and he asks her name. The girl will tell Joni her name if he can deliver all the film reel that will be watched. Wanting to know her name, Joni determines and promises not to be late.

Casting Nicholas Saputra as the main actor is a smart choice done by Joko Anwar. Not only that Nicholas Saputra who is only 21 years old at the time can portray the innocent Joni very well he is also already famous for his acting in one of the booming Indonesia film Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? (2001) which can attract watcher. Joko Anwar and Nicholas Saputra already work together twice in Biola Tak Berdawai and Arisan already understand each other that’s why Joko Anwar can polish Saputra’s acting to shine in this movie.

This film is what you need if you want to fill your free time while relaxing yourself. The story is simple yet attractive and not boring. You don’t need to think hard to understand this movie yet it is unpredictable. Joko Anwar smartness also can be seen for not trying too hard and making his first film as a director not complicated. Another thing that makes this film enjoyable is the music. A lot of good music is used in this movie not just foreign music but also local music especially the indie music.

What makes me draw my attention and makes me wonder is the setting used in each scene. In this film, a lot of places are used and it seems that every time Joni finishes his problem he jumps to another different place to face another obstacle. It would be better if the production team make a connection from one place to another. Another thing that bothering in this movie is Time plotting. The time that Joni has to deliver the reel and the time he spends in this film doesn’t match; however, it does not matter too much since this film is a bit absurd from the start.

Joko Anwar who acts as an assistant director in film Biola Tak Berdawai starts his career as a director from here with only his little knowledge about filmmaking. For the first movie from a new movie director, this film is far too good. The selection of the cast, music, and storyline is so good. “Should I watch this movie?” Absolutely yes. If you ever feel that you want to watch a movie while laying down and eating a snack than this movie is all you need. With simple story and short duration, this film can make you enjoy yourself.
