Stip & Pensil, using literal translation in English this title would be ‘Eraser and Pencil’. Yes, just as you think this film relates to school. Joko Anwar, who is famous for his skill in writing or directing horror film, also proves himself that he can write a comedy story. With the help of Ernest Prakasa and Beno Raja Gukguk, Joko Anwar provides a funny film that will make you cry and laugh at the same time.
Toni (Ernest Prakasa), Aghi (Ardit Erwandha), Bubu (Tatjana Saphira), and Saras (Indah Permatasari) are four teenagers who come from rich families. They are hated by their friends in school because they are arrogant and they think that they are the coolest. Suddenly, a substitute teacher (Pandji Pragiwaksono) comes and asks the class to write an essay. After meeting a boy named Ucok (Iqbal Sinchan), they write an essay about the importance of school for children in the slum area and somehow, they end up building their own school for children in the slum area. However, it is not as easy as they think to build a school and to teach the children. Can they face the obstacles of building free school and the pressure from their friend?

Not only filled
with lots of funny scenes, this film also gives good messages. This film shows
one of the social issues in Indonesia that make many children in the slum area
in Indonesia not go to school for example economic reason. Through this film
also we can know how important knowledge is. Through this film also we get an inspiration
to use our youth and knowledge for making better society. What exceptional
about this film is its balance between the comedy and its seriousness. Sometimes
there are silly scenes about the main cast and sometimes there is seriousness
when they talk about the social issue. the combination of those two things will
attract you to the story.
Iqbal Sinchan
gives us a great performance in this movie. Even though he still a child but he
can play different characters. From being cute and friendly child to being
clever and annoying child. He also shows different expressions from silly
expression to serious expression like angry, sad and regretful. He may be not the
main character in this film but his role holds an important role in the story and
he plays it well. Seeing his performance make you agree that he really deserves
to win best child actor award and he did.

Even
though this film has good messages toward children, unfortunately it is really
not that appropriate for them. Many jokes contain what only known by adult or
in legal age. In some chances, the cast cussing and they also throw a joke
about sex. Therefore, you need to consider with whom you watch this film. If
you want to have children watching this, you may guide them.
Stip & Pensil is the comeback of
Joko Anwar in comedy film after making a lot of horror films. All of the cast
play their role very well, especially the two main female casts who are
cheerful and cute. The combination of comedy and social issues make us not only
laugh but also think about the society. With easy to understand storyline make
this film more enjoyable. Add this film to your ‘need to watch film’ list. This
film is not only amusing and entertaining but it also has moral value about
many things.
