“What is Arisan?” You might think about that when you see the title of this films. Here in Indonesia, “Arisan” is a common thing and it can be considered as culture. In simple a way, “Arisan” is the same as gathering that’s why the English title of this film is “the gathering”. Arisan is kind of activity, identically done by married women, where they can talk and share information. You might think that it will be boring to watch the gathering of married women but you don’t need to worry because even though this film titled “Arisan” there is something more about this film.
Sakti (Tora Sudiro), Meimei (Cut Mini Theo) dan Andien (Aida Nurmala) are best friends since high school and now in their 30s they are considered to succeed and busy with their own life Sakti as an architect, Meimei as an interior designer, and Andien as a housewife that married to a rich man. Each of them has their own problem. Andien who tries to be a socialite and thinks that she can be happy that way, Meimei who cannot have a child, and Sakti who is gay but hides it while trying everything he can to change it. Following her psychiatrist suggestion, Meimei tries to get a refreshing activity in her life by joining Andien’s Arisan Group and Sakti who takes Meimei to the Arisan place is forced to join also. The three friends hope to get away from their problems while finding the solutions but what facing them is another problem in their life.

The charm of films that was written or directed by Joko Anwar is he
puts a lot of social issues whether social issues in Indonesia or in general in
his films. A lot of high-class women in
Indonesia come to Arisan just to show off about how good their life and wealth
is showed really well in this movie. In addition, the dilemma that is faced by
Sakti portrayed perfectly the situation at that year around 2003 when the environment
has not opened up about homosexual especially here in Indonesia so lots people
even the homosexual themselves think that they are sick or weird. Not just
social issues this film also show you about friendship and family hence we can
learn a lot about life through this film.

This film may have a good cast and a good story which cover lots of
social issues, however, there is something off about this film. It is that
there is no actual connection between the main casts’ problems. The writer just
forced all the problems to connect toward the end of the film. In addition,
this film does not cover about Arisan that much. It is weird that they titled
this film “Arisan” because all of the conflicts in this film has nothing to do
with it nor do the film talk about Arisan.
In conclusion, even though this film looks like it is a boring film because it titled Arisan and it only tells about three problems of three friend that suddenly and forced to connect with each other. It is still very enjoyable. Not just it filled with social issues or sad things, Arisan also has some funny scenes that make this film not boring. It has a lot of good life lessons. Go check this film out. I guarantee you that regret will never hit you. You can learn a lot from this film.
