Pengabdi Setan. It is the latest film by
Joko Anwar at the time this article uploaded. Its English title is ‘Satan’s
Slave’ and just from the title we can assume that Pengabdi Setan is a horror film. So, if you search for a new horror
film to watch, go check this film. This film is considered as Joko Anwar best
film. Watched by more than 4 million people in Indonesia, Pengabdi Setan also aired in more than 26 countries. With a lot of
scary scenes combine with some mystery make this film is worth watching. It
will give you a great show.
Rini, her father (Bront Palarae) and
his three brothers Tony (Endy Arfian), Bondi (Nasar Amnuz) and Ian (Adhiyat)
move to a small village after they sold their home to take care Rini’s mother
(Ayu Laskmi) who has an unknown illness for three and half year. Suddenly her
mother died and her dad needs to go to the city for work. Night after night
their family is disturbed by a female ghost that resembles their mother. Then,
Rini and his brother try to find the reason of this nightmare that threatened
their family’s safety.

This is Tara Basro second time to
work with Joko Anwar and this is her first time to act in horror film but
despite it is her first time she proves that she is a great actress with
experience. Her sadness, anger and scared expression make us amazed with her
acting. Even though Tara Basro does not win the best actress award in Indonesia
film festival but she still gives us a great performance. Other casts also give
an amazing performance especially the two children actors Nasar and Adhiyat.
Regardless of their age, they act very well in this film. When they act from
being creepy or being scared, they act naturally. No wonder that Adhiyat even
won the best child actor award.
This film is a remake from the 80s
film with the same title. Good thing is that Joko Anwar made this film totally different
from the previous one. In this film, there are some additional characters and
the plot also made not too similar to the old one. The more important thing
this film has some mysteries in it. Both of them are great films and if you are
wondering which one you should watch. You should watch both of them if you have
time because they have different vibe and story so you will get a new
experience in each film.

This film really makes you curious with
its mystery, however, not all of them is revealed in here. In fact, those
unrevealed puzzles even though they only minor detail but they can explain more
about the background of the story which viewer think can make this film more
interesting. Another thing is sometimes the scene is not clear like when the
ghost appeared or when some accident happens. This make the viewer need more
extra concentration when watching Pengabdi
Setan or they will miss some scenes.
In
conclusion, even though this film is a remake but it is very dissimilar to the
other one. With more advanced technology and cinematography technique make this
film more real and natural. The cast amazing performance and the mystery
elements become the charm of this film. GO CHECK IT OUT!! If you can even the
old one. This film is filled with a lot of scary scenes even you can feel what
the characters feel.
